Boosting Confidence with Bakuchiol

Boosting Confidence with Bakuchiol

An all-natural retinol alternative featuring OYU Cosmetics

Written by Laurel Enright

Retinol is a skincare ingredient that is recommended by dermatologists and estheticians all over our industry. It's an ingredient that has multiple talents including anti-aging and smoothing out textured skin. However, consumers often times will use products like this and overuse Retinol or not use it properly which can result in plenty of uncomfortable side effects. Success does not happen overnight. If you have had a bad experience with Retinol, maybe you should try Bakuchiol. Bakuchiol is an all-natural alternative to Retinol and is much gentler while still giving you results. If you would like to learn more about how Bakuchiol could benefit you, please read on.

What Is Retinol?

Retinol is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A, an antioxidant that is essential for healthy eyes and skin. Our bodies cannot produce this vitamin on their own, so it needs to be supplemented by diet and/or topical skincare. It is often added to anti-aging products for its ability to promote skin cell turnover, build collagen, fight free radicals and erase fine lines and wrinkles.

How Does Retinol Work?

In order for the skin to benefit from retinol, enzymes in the body must convert it into retinoic acid (also known as tretinoin), the active form of Vitamin A. Retinoic acid works on a cellular level to optimize the following functions that improve skin’s health and vitality.

Retinol helps with efficient skin cell turnover which is necessary for our skin growth and repair. As children, our skin cells naturally turn over every two weeks; however, as early as your twenties, the turnover process starts to slow to every 28-35 days. By the age of fifty, it takes as long as 45-90 days for dead skin to fully shed from your skin’s surface. As a result, our skin becomes drier, thinner, and more pigmented as we mature. Retinol activates surface cells to turn over more quickly, enabling our skin to grow more healthy cells and shed dead layers.

Over time, our skin’s starts to lose collagen and elastin. These proteins, which provide necessary support and elasticity, keep skin dense, plump and wrinkle-free. Our skin begins to loosen and sag and fine lines and wrinkles set in. Retinoic acid not only stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, but it also prevents their breakdown, keeping your skin strong, firm and elastic.

Ninety percent of skin aging is caused by environmental factors like pollution, blue light and UV rays. These expose skin to free radicals - highly reactive molecules that cause oxidative stress and damage healthy skin cells. Unchecked, this can degrade the skin’s structural integrity and lead to premature aging. A Vitamin A derivative, retinol's antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals and reduce their reactivity, thereby improving your skin’s health and resilience.

Retinol Benefits & Side Effects

Through these actions, retinol provides the following benefits:

  • Removes dead skin cells

  • Clears congestion

  • Shrinks large pores

  • Smooths uneven skin texture

  • Minimizes fine lines & wrinkles

  • Keeps skin firm and plump

  • Fades dark spots

However, regular use of synthetic retinol can cause the following side effects:

  • Dryness

  • Peeling

  • Redness

  • Itching

  • Irritation

  • UV sensitivity

Note:

Most dermatologists advise that you skip retinol if you suffer from rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Now that you know a little bit about Retinol and how it works, here are some things you should know about Bakuchiol. OYU Cosmetics has a Bakuchiol Booster Serum that works as a Retinol alternative. It improves skin firmness and elasticity and minimizes the visible signs of aging caused by free radical damage. Unlike synthetic Vitamin A, this alternative is derived from the Bakuchiol flower.

How do you add this to your routine?

If you are going to add in an exfoliating product to your skincare routine, I would keep the rest of your routine gentle and nourishing.

Serum is typically one of the last products that you use in your routine. With this in mind, let's start from the beginning.

Your first step should be a gentle cleanser. If you are going to add exfoliation on top of using this serum, you need to pay attention to the ingredients and the type of exfoliation.

For example, Dermalogica has a rice based exfoliator called Daily Microfoliant. The directions say to use this as a paste, but doing it this way while adding an exfoliating product will over-exfoliate your skin. Instead, add water to the powder and move it around in your hands until it becomes a foam. Rub the foam all around your face, nose, neck and chest for a minute. If you are doing this in the shower, use medium warm water and leave the foam on like a mask and let the steam help activate the rice enzymes.

If you use this light physical/chemical exfoliation, it is much gentler and you shouldn't end up red or irritated. A paste in this instance will be too harsh. If you would like to help support my blog and buy Daily Microfoliant from Dermalogica, you can use my affiliate link here. (Using this link will get you 2x the amount of points on your order.)

For best results, apply the Bakuchiol Booster Serum:

  • 2 times a day, morning and night. You should start out using this serum once a day in the morning with sunscreen and see how your skin tolerates it. The reason you need sunscreen, is because this product is actively stimulating your skin cell turnover rate and will make it sensitive to the sun.

  • This product can be used every day but I would, in my professional opinion, start out with 2 times a week in the mornings with sunscreen applied throughout the day.

I hope that this blog post gave you some insight on how Retinol and Bakuchiol work. At the end of the day, only you can choose what feels right for you, but with this information at your fingertips, I have hopefully made your decision easier, whatever that may be. I think they are both great choices and they both give great results.
